NT-proBNP in Long COVID

NT-proBNP, also described as Natriuretic peptide, is a vascular marker reported as elevated in Long COVID (PASC, Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19) when patients are compared with healthy controls. Clinically, it has been associated with cardiovascular LC. This entry summarises Thomas et al. 2024. Group-level associations like this do not translate into an individual diagnostic cut-off.

Trials, interventions and tests

In clinical-trial registrations this marker maps to the outcome term Factors of inflamatory and prothrombotic processes: D-Dimer, N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT Pro-BNP), C-reactive protenin and Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) (5 registered trials use a matching outcome measure).

Frequently asked questions

Is NT-proBNP high or low in Long COVID?

Elevated. Studies summarised in the OSMF atlas report higher NT-proBNP in Long COVID than in healthy controls. Source: Thomas et al. 2024.

What symptoms is NT-proBNP associated with in Long COVID?

The cited literature associates this marker with Cardiovascular LC. These are population-level associations and do not mean the marker causes the symptoms.

Which test measures NT-proBNP?

It is measured as a blood test (serum / plasma / whole blood). The standard laboratory code is LOINC 33762-6. Commercial laboratories such as Quest Diagnostics, LabCorp list an orderable assay.

Is one abnormal NT-proBNP result diagnostic of Long COVID?

No. No single biomarker is diagnostic of Long COVID. NT-proBNP findings come from group comparisons, overlap considerably between patients and controls, and vary with study design, timing and comparison group. A result should be interpreted by a clinician alongside symptoms, history and other tests.

Is NT-proBNP specific to Long COVID?

No. The same marker is also reported in Atrial Fibrillation, Hypertension in this atlas, so it reflects shared biology (for example inflammation or vascular stress) rather than a condition-specific signature.
