Between 25 May 2026 and 31 May 2026 the tracker indexed 11 new peer-reviewed studies and 5 clinical-trial updates across 8 post-viral and post-infectious conditions.

By the numbers

11new studies this issue
5trial updates this issue
544studies currently in the feeds
620clinical trials tracked
546biomarkers catalogued

Studies tracked = entries across the 8 condition feeds (each feed keeps a rolling window of recent PubMed results); trials tracked = ClinicalTrials.gov records in the current trial snapshot (last run 2026-06-26); biomarkers catalogued = marker entries across all OSMF biomarker atlases.

Cardiopulmonary exercise test results do not change over two sequential days in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Frontiers in physiology · 29 May 2026 · Mancini, Donna M, Cook, Dane B, Brunjes, Danielle L, Soto, Tiffany et al. PubMed 42212259

Two consecutive cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPETs) performed 24 hours apart are increasingly used to determine post-exertional malaise (PEM) and disability in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Declines in functional capacity on Day 2 reflect impaired recovery and PEM.

Central noradrenergic deficiency in post-infectious chronic fatigue: neurobehavioral correlates.

Brain communications · 28 May 2026 · Aregawi, Lillian, Walitt, Brian, Sullivan, Patti, Norato, Gina et al. PubMed 42205163

Fatigue, brain fog and post-exertional malaise are major features of post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and post-acute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. To date, no specific neurotransmitter abnormalities have been found in either condition.

Toward a Molecular Reclassification of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Integrating Multi-Omics, Machine Learning, and Precision Medicine.

International journal of molecular sciences · 27 May 2026 · Frank, Joshua, Nesterovitch, Nicole, Movva, Chetana, Klimas, Nancy G et al. PubMed 42196410

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex, multi-system disease characterized by a multitude of symptoms across various organ systems. Diagnosis has relied heavily on heterogeneous clinical symptom presentation and evolving case definitions, with treatment focused on addressing presenting symptoms due to the paucity of validated biomarkers.

Human Endogenous Retroviruses in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Emerging Roles in Pathogenesis, Immunity, Biomarkers and Therapeutics.also Other post-viral

International journal of molecular sciences · 27 May 2026 · Perera, Krishani Dinali, Oltra, Elisa, Carding, Simon R PubMed 42196290

Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are potential driving forces of the pathophysiology of Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), linking post-infectious immune dysfunction to chronic inflammation and immune and neurocognitive dysfunction that are hallmark features of ME/CFS. Accumulating evidence from related autoimmune diseases and cancers has shown that reactivated HERVs can contribute to...

Comprehensive Immunophenotyping of Monocytes and Dendritic Cells Suggests Distinct Pathophysiology in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Long COVID.

International journal of molecular sciences · 27 May 2026 · Petrov, Steliyan, Bozhkova, Martina, Ivanovska, Mariya, Kalfova, Teodora et al. PubMed 42196466

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and long Coronavirus Disease 2019 (long COVID) are complex chronic conditions that often follow infectious triggers with overlapping clinical features but poorly defined pathophysiological relationships. This study aimed to identify disease-specific immune signatures through multiparameter immunophenotyping of monocytes, dendritic cells, and T cell subsets.

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) 4 new

[Post-COVID postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome: Documentation of a hyperadrenergic phenotype by comprehensive autonomic testing].

Annales de cardiologie et d'angeiologie · 27 May 2026 · Rahali, Z, El Boussaadani, B, Raissuni, Z PubMed 42191437

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia characterized by an excessive increase in heart rate upon standing, in the absence of orthostatic hypotension. Post-infectious forms, particularly following SARS-CoV-2 infection, have been increasingly reported.

Eye pain and ocular surface characteristics in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): The role of autonomic dysfunction.

The ocular surface · 25 May 2026 · Karakus, Sezen, Huang, Jane Jin, Yashar, Meltem, Haile, Meron et al. PubMed 42183595

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), an autonomic nervous system dysfunction, is frequently associated with ocular symptoms including pain and dryness. This study aimed to characterize ocular surface findings in POTS patients to clarify whether these symptoms reflect classic dry eye disease or altered sensory processing related to autonomic dysfunction.

Comparative Analysis of Circulating Cytokines and Adrenergic Autoantibodies in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Postacute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, and Healthy Controls.

Journal of the American Heart Association · 25 May 2026 · Seeley, Marie-Claire, Gallagher, Celine, Wilson, Gemma, Bailey, Danielle et al. PubMed 42179241

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is increasingly recognized after SARS-CoV-2 infection. We compared autonomic phenotype, functional impact, and circulating immune markers in POTS, postacute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), and healthy controls.
