SARS-CoV-2 seeds IAPP aggregation and β-cell failure.

Signal transduction and targeted therapy · 9 October 2026 · Song, Zhiqi, Xu, Yanfeng, Zhao, Wenjie, Zhang, Ling et al. PubMed 42850229

The global diabetes incidence has surged post-COVID-19, yet how SARS-CoV-2 drives long-term beta cell (β-cell) failure remains incompletely elucidated. We identified a mechanism whereby SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins directly hijack islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) to induce pathogenic amyloid deposition, disrupting insulin granule maturation, trafficking, and secretion in an age-susceptible islet microenvironment.

Patients with Long COVID commonly experience fatigue-related distress, often leading to low energy, reduced activity endurance, and exertional dyspnea, all of which negatively impact quality of life. Although studies have increasingly explored the effects of exercise on Long COVID-related fatigue, a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence is lacking.

Depleted before the dose: the mitochondrial vulnerability threshold hypothesis for fluoroquinolone-associated multisystem toxicity.

Frontiers in pharmacology · 8 October 2026 · Sewell, Patrick E, Jensen, Christopher J PubMed 42846278

Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics have an established capacity for mitochondrial injury, yet only a subset of exposed patients develop severe or persistent toxicity. We propose the Mitochondrial Vulnerability Threshold (MVT) hypothesis: that whether a standard therapeutic FQ dose produces clinically significant toxicity may depend substantially on the patient's pre-existing mitochondrial reserve capacity rather than...

Could persistent extravascular fibrin deposition link microvascular and interstitial pathology in long COVID?

Frontiers in medicine · 8 October 2026 · Kubo, Keiko PubMed 42845893

Long COVID is associated with persistent endothelial dysfunction, microvascular impairment, coagulation abnormalities, impaired fibrinolysis, and tissue hypoxia. Although these intravascular abnormalities are increasingly documented, less attention has been paid to whether vascular injury may also generate persistent pathology in the extravascular interstitial compartment.

Brain communications · 8 October 2026 · Higgins, Darragh, Zhao, Sijia, Husain, Masud, Denno, Peter et al. PubMed 42846933

The cognitive mechanisms underlying post-acute COVID-19 sequelae ('Long COVID') remain poorly defined. While deficits in memory and executive function are well-documented, it is unclear whether these arise from primary neural dysfunction or are secondary consequences of fatigue-related factors.

Pulmonary Function, Functional Capacity, Voice, and Sleep in Post-COVID-19 Individuals With and Without Inspiratory Muscle Weakness.

Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation · 7 October 2026 · Dos Santos, Marthina Carbone, da Silva, Thamires Alessandra Silveira, Fleig, Alessandra Hofstadler Deiques et al. PubMed 42844033

Prior COVID-19 vaccination and cognitive outcomes after SARS-CoV-2 infection: a mini-review.

Dementia & neuropsychologia · 7 October 2026 · da Silva, Lucas Gomes, Oliveira, Jordano César Milagres, Fini, Bruna Carmeni Di, Porto, Aline Arantes et al. PubMed 42841133

COVID-19 infection has been frequently associated with cognitive deficits that persist for months after the acute phase, but the impact of vaccination on preventing these deficits remains uncertain. Evidence suggests that immunization reduces the incidence and severity of post-COVID symptoms, yet few studies have evaluated its influence on cognition using objective measures.
